Feast Your Eyes on This!

In class on Friday we will discuss how to use small but significant clues to sneak your way into a painting. Please peruse the painting below and respond to the questions that follow it.

Important notes:
  • Please do NOT Google this painting or use any other outside help; I only want to know what this class makes of the painting.
  • Also, be sure to read others' responses before you post your own and include whether you agree or disagree with some of their interpretations.

1. Which part of the painting is your eye drawn to first?  Why do you think this is?

2. As you let your eyes wander all over the painting (up to down, left to right, corner to corner), which details of the painting do you have questions about?  In other words, if you could ask the artist one question about a specific detail in this painting, what would it be?  Post that question here.

3.  Let your mind attempt to draw together the details and make sense of the painting as a whole.  What do you think this painting is trying to convey to us?  Defend your thinking.

Please remember to proofread your answers carefully before posting.  Your response should reflect your professionalism.

  1. 1. The part of the painting that my eye is drawn to first is the man pushing that thing that's behind the horse. I think that this part draws my eye because it's the center of the painting.

    2. Why did you angle the picture the way that you did? In the sense of why can you see the ocean and both sides of it along with the two people, what was the purpose of all of the placement?

    3. I think that this painting is trying to convey a time when this town wasn't doing so great. I think this because the one man behind the horse looks like he's hanging his head and the other man in looking up at the sky almost hopefully. Also in the water on the bottom right corner seems to maybe have someone drowning in it, by the it also looks kind of like there could be a storm by the way the sails on the ships look.

    1. I think it is really interesting what you think the painting is tying to conveys. You included a lot of important details.

    2. I think that this is called the fall of Icarus because there was the guy falling into the water and now that I know it was placed in Sicily I understand why it looked the way it looked setting wise.

  2. 1. The first thing my eye is drawn to is the red shirt because it is bright and stands out. Compared to the rest of the painting the shirt is a great and powerful color.

    2. Why did you shade and blend the colors in the way that you did? And how?

    3. I think the painting is trying to state that the whole world keeps moving on and not noticing that one person is dying in the ocean.(In the bottom right hand corner). It seems like everyone is in there own little worlds, not really caring about the rest of the world, only caring about them self's.

    1. I like your answer to the second question because I would have never thought of that. You went a little farther out of the box than I did.

    2. I was kind of right on my answer to number three but, I would change the statement about what the painting is trying to get across. The painting is not about the world not caring if someone dies, it is about how someone dies because they are stupid and don't follow rules. I also believe that the grey rock in the middle of the ocean is the labyrinth. Also the man near the water (bottom right hand corner) maybe his father.

  3. 1. The ocean is what caught me eyes first. I love the ocean. Whenever I see a painting with an ocean, it always amuses me. It's outstanding to have one huge body of water, but then artists come along and interpret one part of the ocean into what they see or what it would look like in a dream.

    2. The farmer seems to have a good work ethic, while every one else around him are enjoying life such as the hiker, the swimmer and the person feeding the fish. I would ask the artist if this picture had/has something to do with his life either in his past or present.

    3. It seems to me that every one in this picture is having a good happy life, I see no darkness anywhere. I think the moral of this picture is attitude is everything. with a good attitude, good things will come to you.

    4. I like how your question was based off of the farmer in the painting.

    5. I see a someone maybe drowning, might be Icarus but I don't know.

  4. When I first look at this painting my eyes are drawn to the person wearing the red shirt. To me I think this person stands out because there are only a few other humans in this picture and not only is this one the most distinct and big but also the red color stands out among the rest of the colors because its so bright. As I take a further look at this picture I question what the setting of this picture is. There are workers, animals, boats and water. There also large rocks that resemble that of a mountain that make me want to question the author and ask him what his goal for this setting would be. I think this painting is trying to convey how different modern life is than it was years and years ago. Life today is very modernized and much of what we do is technology based. In this painting it is very clear that much of the work and transportation us often done my the human hand. Today we have cars, factories, and other people that we rely on to do our work for us. This painting does a good job of really showing how different times were back when one had to rely on themselves for what they needed.

    6. Very well done. I like how you compared the paintings era to our time.

    7. Now that I have a better understanding of the painting I notice the legs sticking up out of the water that represents Icarus drowning because his wings fell off and he fell to his death.

  5. 1.) When I first look at the painting my eyes are drawn into the man wearing a red shirt. I think that is because, the red stands out from all the other colors in the painting.
2.) After looking at the picture more closely I noticed in the bottom right corner that it looks like there are a some legs sticking out of the water. I would ask why is that? What is happening to the person?
3.) It seems like the painting is trying to tell us that, everyone minds their own business and nobody really notices what is going on around them. There is a lot going on here and nobody is looking around. Everyone is look forward and doing their own thing. For example there is a man on the side of the ocean and it look like someones legs are in the air and maybe that person is struggling but the man on the side isn't doing anything.

    1. I like your reply because I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the legs in the corner! Also, the red really does pop out from the other colors.

    2. Maybe the dad is trying to drown the boy because he hated having him as a son

      Delete
  6. 1.) The first thing my eyes wander to on the painting is the sun way in the distance. I think my eyes wander to that particular part of the painting because it is just so bright and vibrant, and it kind of makes you happy!
2.)If I could ask the author one thing about this painting, it would have to be the person down by the water that looks like they're about to fall in the water. I would ask "Why is the person the only one down by the water? What is he looking for? Is he going to fall in?"
3.) I think that the painting is trying to convey us to look at the man in the red shirt because he just pops out, and it looks like he is working. It also kind of looks like he is tip-toeing away from something which is kind of weird.

    1. Your answer the third question is really interesting. I never thought of it in that way. I think that is a very interesting way to think of it. I liked it a lot

      Delete
    2. I liked the way you used the word "tip-toeing" which I thought was interesting word choice and I agree with you about the man in the red shirt and how he pops out of the painting.

      Delete
  7. 1. The first thing that caught my eye in this painting was the man in the red shirt pushing the cart. It really pops amongst the rest of the background and seems almost electric.
    2. If I could ask the author one question, it would be where the setting of this painting is. I want to know where the person is and what he is doing, and by knowing the location I feel like it would answer more questions that I have about the painting.
    3. I think this painting shows hardworking people in a small but beautiful setting, on the outskirts of a more modern town. These people on the outside seem to look peaceful, and remind me of the saying "out of sight out of mind." Even though the town can't see them, they most likely provide something to the town in the distance, which is something that happens in our everyday life; we get our food and products from somewhere that is not right outside our door, and don't think about where it comes from, or who put in the effort so we can have it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I love how you said even though the main town can't see them they are still contributing to society by doing there work. It made me think of the painting in a different way!

    2. I agree with you that the man in the red shirt popped out in the pictures. I like your description of the picture, and it made me think about the picture in a new way!

    3. In this painting I now see this man who is headfirst in the water who looks like he fell in and is drowning in the ocean. Also, the sheep herder is looking up to the sky as if someone fell or is falling from it.

      Delete
  8. My eye is first drawn to the person in the red shirt, because the rest of the painting is more blues and greens, and a little more peaceful, then when you look at the red shirt, it's a pop of color that you wouldn't expect would go with the rest of the painting. If I could ask a question to the author, I think I'd ask what the story of the painting is. Where's the person going? Or what's the town like on the other side of the painting? I think the painting is showing the time early in the morning, before most people are up, when those people are working; preparing for the day ahead. I think it's showing us to work even though times are tough, or when others may not be working as hard as you are. It's telling us to just persevere.

    2. The legs in the corner, are probably his legs, and he is drowning. Also the town seems to be very close to the sun, which is why his wings melted.

  9. 1. My eyes were first drawn to the ocean because the sunset is very pretty and I love water.
    2. My question would be, why did you decide to paint this?
    3. I believe this painting might be trying to show that people in a village need boats, to gather things, and water. Also, in the bottom right hand corner, why is there a person kicking their legs out of the water?

    1. I think its really cool how you noticed the person in the background who was kicking his leg out of the water. Paying attention to details always helps with understanding the painting more!

    2. The person drowning in the corner is Icarus, since he fell to the ocean. Also, there is. Very big rock, maybe that is the rock at the end of the story, marking Icaurs' grave.

  10. 1. The first thing that stood out to me was the man in the red shirt. The color pops out from the other dull, gloomy colors.
    2. My question to the artist is, Why did you choose this setting and colors?
    3. I think the painting is showing that everyone is focused on their own jobs and are not aware of their surroundings. There is a lot going on in the picture; however, they don't all connect to one and other.

  11. 1. The first thing that my eyes were drawn to was the man and his horse using what I think was a tilling machine. I think my eyes were drawn to this because it is the foremost part of the picture and it is the biggest detail.
    2. I would ask the artist where the setting of the painting is. I would also ask the artist why there is what looks to be a man drowning in the bottom right of the painting.
    3. I think the artist was trying to portray how tough life was back then. The farmers stayed out there all day and the fishers were fishing all day to feed themselves and the herders were herding all day. It's like how jobs are today but less mind power and more physical power.

  12. 1) the first thing that caught my eye was the lady in the front with the donkey. Also the tree to the left of her looks like a bing cherry tree that you would find in china or Japan so I think that's where this painting is from.
2)I notice that there is a ships with it's sails being blown so maybe it is windy in the painting. But my question is why does he have a city in the background and farmers and sheep in the front ground?
    3) I think the people in front work for the city and harvest for it. On one of the ships it looks like they are trhowing fish off of it. It could also be an important port for ships to come into. And I think that the city was a big city for the century of this painting. So I think that everyone was working hard the ships were fishing and the herders were farming and you had to work long hours back then and the author is portraying that life wasn't easy back then unless you were rich.

    2. Your post was very descriptive and helped me see the painting in another light. For example, I believe that the cherry tree that you mentioned had any significance, but now I can see that it could help a viewer guess where the painting is based.

    3. I agree with your question about the farm being in the front ground and the city in the back. It seems like it would make more sense to have the castle area in the front ground.

  13. My eyes were first drawn to the background and sky of the painting. I am personally very attracted to bright colors and the way that the illustrator blended the blue and yellow with an almost seamless transition is truly amazing.

The first question that popped in to my head is "Where are they"?

I think that it is trying to tell us that there are many things going on in this point in time.

    1. Now that I know more details about the painting in general, the person drowning and the big stone structure on the left catch my eye most. My only question now is "what made the painter want to illustrate this scene?"

  14. My eyes were first drawn to the sun in the open sky in the background. I think it looks so beautiful in the vast open sky. The way in reflects off of the ocean is so eye catching. I think this painting is conveying a serene, peaceful village near the water. You can see the simplicity of the workers as they look so at peace doing their work. One specific question that came across my mind is what are the workers doing. Overall, I think the artist is trying to convey a peaceful inter-dependent village.

    1. I like how you said your eyes were drawn to the sun. Because most other people said that they notice the red shirt. I think it's cool that you noticed something different.

  15. 1. The first thing I notice about this picture is the man in a read shirt holding onto the plow type thing connected to the horse. I think he stands out the most because the color of the red shirt is unique compared to all the other colors in the painting and how they blend together. Also he seems to be the largest figure of possible movement and sense of liveliness.

    2. The one question I have about this picture is why did they choose to paint the image in the tilt and point of view of a person or object on the top of the hill?

    3. As a complete overview of the image, I would say that the image shows that there is hard work put into anything in order for it to prosper. This image shows somewhat of a sad side to what could be a good time and that no matter the time, there is someone who is working hard and others who do nothing yet they are not treated the way they should be. Also that there is always a dark side to a situation along with the good side.

    6. This is probably called the fall of Icuras because of the man drowning in the water and how bright the sun is and how the winds should make the waves quite large

  16. When I look at this piece my eyes are immediately drawn to the sun. The amount of space that is used and the brightness of the sun really helps to catch my eye. This image contains a lot of diversity which makes me wonder what the setting is. More specifically why did he put a city and a farm in the same painting. When in reality farms are much further out from the hustle and bustle of the city. That being said I think that the artist is trying to convey the idea that though we all live are own far apart different lives but we live in a small world.

    3. I think its called the fall of Icuras because the man at the bottom of the page is drowning. You can also find a man plowing his land. The picture also includes the sun and the water where he had to fly between.

  17. 1. When first looking at this painting, I find myself drawn to the man in the red shirt. The unique red color, which does not appear in the rest of the painting, and the man's central position in the picture is what catches my eye.

    2. If I could, I would ask the author why they used such odd proportions. The ship near the bottom looks to be too small in comparison to the people in the painting.

    3. The image, I think, is trying to convey a sense of hope and a journey into the unknown. The ships and the assumed time period remind me of the voyage to the new world. The man looking up at the sky could be wishing for a safe travel, while the depressed boy may have someone close to him on one of those ships. The sunrise in the background also provides a sense of new beginnings and freedom, which adds to the overall feel created by the painting.

    6. The legs in the water are Icarus falling to his death. The island in the water was their prison. The man looking up just caught a glimpse of Icarus flying away.

  18. 1. When I first look at the picture I see the man in the red shirt. I think what attracts me to it is the vibrant color of the shirt and is definitely the brightest color in the painting. The shirt is also in the middle or the focal point of the painting so everything else revolves around him.

    2. If I could as the author a question about the painting it would be what is the City in the background? Is it a city of power?

    3. I feel like this painting is trying to convey a sense of uncertainty but also a sense of adventure and change. I think it is trying to communicate that change is something that we shouldn't fear but something that we should embrace. After all the only thing in life that doesn't change is change itself.

  19. 1. The girl with the horse walking down the path. I think my eyes is first drawn to this first because that part of the painting it closer to you than the rest.
    2. Why is the bottom right had corner of the painting darker than the rest of the Painting?
    3. I think the painting is trying to convey that the people of that area work hard and well in to the day or they start early in the morning to get a lot done. I also think it is the people of the lower class that have to do this hard work early or end later in the day. You can tell this because of the girl in the front of the painting she has had a rough and tiring day. Her clothes also lead us to believe that she is from the lower class.

  20. 1. The first thing that caught my eye in the painting was the man or woman in the front with the horse leading. It pops out to me because the color of the shirt is orange and draws my attention to it easily.Another thing that caught my eye was the boat in the ocean, its another large part of the painting so it also caught my eye easily.
    2. Some questions I would ask to the artist of the painting are:
Why did you decide to paint this picture?
What is the meaning of the painting?
    3. The painting is trying to convey that the people in the picture are hard workers. They all are are working to support their own lives and families. The painting is telling us that we need to work hard for ourselves and what we want. It shows that people are only caring for themselves and what they want to have.

    2. Why did you choose to incorporate darker and gloomier colors in the corners of the painting?
    3. I think the painting is trying to convey the way our world is. I think the painting has a lot of composition in it because no part of the painting seems empty. There are cities in the back, ships in the ocean, farmers and workers, animals, and also a drowning person. Just the like the painting, there are many things going on in the world, whether it be bad or good. If you at the painting longer, you can see that everyone is minding their own business which represents that even when many things are happening, others don't really take the time to understand what's going on because they are busy with their own lives.

  22. 1) The first thing that caught my eye when I looked at this painting is the horse leading the man. This is because it's front and center of the painting, and because it is brighter then the rest of the picture.
    2) If I could ask the author a question about this painting, it would be, why does the man in the bottom right corner of the painting appear to be drowning? Does it symbolize anything, and is he actually drowning, or just diving to the bottom?
3)I think this picture is trying to convey the message that even though everyone is separate, we are all still connected and should help each other help. I think this because in this picture there are a lot of separate things going on, however they are all close together and connected in someway. In the bottom right corner, a person appears to be drowning, and nobody seems to notice or to do anything about it. So I think the message of this picture is to notice the things around you, and even though you are separate from some things on some levels, to try to realize the connection you do have with them.

    2. I would like to know what is on the island in the middle left. Is it a cave or a secret passage or something of importance?
    3. I think the picture is trying to convey to us that there are people behind the scenes that we don't really acknowledge. The farmer plowing his fields works hard to get the supplies the city needs, the fishermen are working to get the city fish, and the shepherd tends his sheep so that the city is provided with all these materials. I think the painting shows that there are people behind the scenes that help us more than we truly know.

    3. I think this picture is trying to show how different everyone is. If you look at the painting you will see that everyone is doing their own thing and no one is doing the same thing. For instance the man in the red is working hard and then there is a fisherman down in the corner just relaxing and fishing.

    3. There is a pair of legs in the ocean. the man sitting on the edge is probably not the fisherman, he could be the father reaching for his son.

  26. 1. I am drawn to the city and the sunset in the background. I think this is because that is the focal point of the picture. I also notice the ships coming in or being exported probably for trading.

    2. There is a beautiful sunrise and a harbor in the ocean. There is also a person with a mule and plow. Why is the background mainly ocean? What does the person represent?

    3. I think this painting is to show the beginning of the harvest season long ago with mule power and shipping. I think it is the beginning because it is not too advanced but they have a mule and a plow. There is also a farm-like hill with some sheep so I think they used sheep for their coats and other purposes.

    1. There is a man drowning. He was flying too close to the sun.

  27. 1. My eye was drawn first to the legs of the man pusing the plow. They look particularly inhuman and disconnected from the man himself, and the proportion of his legs is skewed larger than the rest of his body.

    2. The perspective of this picture is very confusing. At first look, I thought that the scene was set high up on a cliff, perhaps at the residence of some Mediterranean farmer. But as I looked closer, at the mountains and the various ships in the bay, i got the impression that the scene was on the beach, yet the background is angled up, as if the viewer is seeing them from above. I wouldn;t have any question for the painter, except where he painted this, and then I would love to see this scene for myself.

    2. This painting is clearly representing an agricultural society, or at least a piece of society, in a small hilly settlement along some sort of bay. There is an overtone of activity, with the man pushing the plow, and several other figures working in the background, and the boats sailing out of the harbor, perhaps to exotic places selling goods procured by the farmer. The painting appears to be fairly old, perhaps 17th century. I think the painting fits that time period well because it was a time of growth and exploration, but still primitive in a sense. At first look, I didn't appreciate this painting all that much but after a long studious look, I think that the artist portrayed his subject very enjoyably.

    17. I was really surprised to hear that the painting was titled "Fall of Icarus". I looked at this painting many times and not once did I notice the man, supposedly "Icarus" in the water. I guess it fits though, the painting is a scene of a typical day in this community, except for the infamous mythical event that the painter placed in the middle of it.

  28. 1. My eye was first drawn to the man in the red shirt because the red stood out from the rest of the colors. This painting has more neutral colors.
    2. My question for the author is why this place and time? I thought of this because there are a lot of features in this painting that I feel is really interesting. For example, the ocean and mountains, and the city and the one farmer.
    3. I think this painting is trying to convey how different the lifestyles are from older times to present. Also, there are mountains in the background which makes me ask myself, "Where is this?" The things in the painting makes me think that it is old and in Europe. I think this way because what the man is dressed and what he is doing.

  29. 1. My eyes were drawn to the man leading the donkey and the sun in the back of the painting. I believe my eyes were drawn to the man first because of the man's brightly colored shirt which made him stand out from the rest of the painting. My eyes were also drawn to the sun because along with the mans shirt, they seemed to me to be the only bright and powerful colors in the painting.
    2. I am very curious to find out why the artist decided to paint the man with his head bowed. I believed that it was because he was sad or in some sort of distress and if the emerging sun in the background represents good times were to come for this town.
    3. I believe that this painting is trying to convey a small little town going through some rough times. I believe this because of the man who is bowing his head, and the other who is looking up into the heavens as if asking for some hope. I believe that good times await this town because of the emerging sun in the background.

    2. I see a ball of fire headed to the ocean in the background. I assume this painting is call the Fall of Icarus because I believe that the ball of fire is Icarus's wings which have caught fire because he has flown too close to the sun.

  30. 1) My eyes were first drawn to the man with the donkey in the bottom middle of the painting. I think this is because he probably has some major significance to the painting and because he is in a red shirt and the red stands out among the other neutral colors of the painting.

    2) The question I am wondering is why the man in the red shirt with the donkey is so significant and important to the painting?

    3) To me, it seems like the painting is trying to convey how life was before society had technology. For example, the painting shows farmers most likely harvesting food for the town. There is also three ships that look like they are either bringing people to immigrate to a new life or going to trade good in other places.

  32. 1. The thing that my eyes are drawn to first is the man in the water. I wonder if he had to walk to plank or if he knows how to swim. My eyes are also drawn to the red shirt because everything else is a lighter color.
    2. My question to the artist would be is this a real location that he knows or has visited, or is it something that he imagined.
    3. It seems to me that this painting is trying to convey that this is a busy place. I think this because you see the big city at a distance. There is a man working in the fields, and fishermen working on the boats and a tourist.

  34. 1. The first thing my eyes are drawn to is the person that looks like a man is guiding the plow that the horse is pulling. I'm drawn to it first because it is in the center of the page and the red pops out.

2.My question for the artist would be where he/she saw this, or what inspired him/her to make this painting.

    3. It seems to me like this painting is trying to show what it was like back in the time when we had to use ships and plows, to do our work, instead of just flying goods, or using a tractor. I think it also shows very hard working people.

    1. I see why it is called fall of icarus because icarus literally fell and died while he was trying to escape from jail with the wings his father constructed.
